I am so blessed to be an American by birth, and a veteran by choice. I feel very strongly about our Veterans. If it were possible I would do everything I could to see they all were given the right to 2 votes per election. Believe me, they truly realize the meaning of freedom.
While activities were underway in Iraq the majority of IED’s were made up of stockpiled Iraqi munitions that had been stored in sand bunkers during the war. They also used ordinance stolen from U.S. convoys, or other sources. The toll was heavy from IEDs initially, but with adding additional armor and improving vehicles it became less devastating. Moving on to Afghanistan presented another issue.
Munitions were more difficult to assemble. More primitive by nature, this virtually barren country has little, other than farming as local income. Farming there requires fertilizer which is not readily available. The U.S. has over the past 20 to 30 years given aid to Pakistan, developing fertilizer facilities, and helping to terrace and irrigate most all of the farmland in that country. The locals have since built plants in their country with other available sources from the general area. A local fertilizer Manufacturer, PAKARAB, one of the countries largest, is the only producer of calcium ammonium nitrate in Pakistan. Pakarab operates 2 factories in Punjab province, the larger of which is on the outskirts of Multan. (Is there a picture starting to develop?) 32 87
The shortage of fertilizer in Afghanistan has meant that smuggling has long been a normal practice. The bomb making material (chloride ammonium nitrate) known as CAN is often trucked into Afghanistan after being repackaged as harmless fertilizer, or smuggled under loads of other goods at checkpoints along the border. Bribes take place on a regular basis by crossing guards. Over a year ago 200 sacks of ammonium nitrate were dug up in Helmand province. The sacks that were partially buried showed they were made by Pakarab. In the spring of 2012, as much as 480,000 pounds of fertilizer had been reported stolen in Pakistan. Just last month over 1,000 pounds was confiscated in a truckload of sacked potatoes at a border crossing. 6472
A U.S. expert has stated that a 110 lb sack of fertilizer can yield from 2 to 4 bombs, depending on them being used for targeting vehicles or infantry troops on foot patrols. Given that the company Pakarab produced 350,000 metric tons of CAN in 2010 alone, over 140,000 bombs could have been made during that period. The production increased by 20% in the past year. Serious talks have been under way about adding die to indicate that the fertilizer product is CAN, to make it more identifiable. Calcium Ammonium Nitrate makes up only 10% of all fertilizer manufactured in Pakistan, while it accounts for most of the product output by the Pakarab plant in Multan. 52 95 (let’s try painting by numbers)
Thus far, there have been as many as 1000 deaths already, and more that 8,000 wounded. With 80% of the bombs in Afghanistan made by fertilizer produced in Pakistan by Pakarab, in Punjab province, on the outskirts of Multan, it would seem there is an obvious pattern here. By the way, the explosives work well on dissident factions inside Pakistan as well. (Shall we try connecting the dots now?)
Being a publicly traded company, Pakarab, has hired BNY Mellon to help it become the first Pakistani company to sell shares on the U.S. stock market. (AMERICA, WAKE UP) 9328
Timothy McVay, helped the American people figure out a few things about fertilizer. He used the same product at the Federal building in Oklahoma City some 15 years ago. But the important thing is what he taught us, was about what he had learned from our military. So in a land far away, it has to be learned all over, body by body. The price of war among friends. 7381
